Haw Loi Loi: A documentary workshop on reflection, representation, and exploration of identity.
Haw Loi Loi means "go slowly" an expression in Shan culture to take care in one's actions and to have an awareness of one's journey. In this workshop we hope for participants to embody this philosophy.
The Haw Loi Loi documentary post-production workshop is in essence a connection of cultures both within Myanmar and the UK through filmmaking. This is achieved in three parts: (1) the documentary production workshop which was completed in August 2022, (2) the post-production workshop to be held in Yangon, and (3) the screenings, forums, and workshops held in Kali Shan State and the UK to exchange ideas.
In Yangon, young editors and sound designers will craft five documentary short stories about the Kali region from the footage that we collected from the workshop in August of 2022. This will also be the first time that they have worked with video footage that is predominantly in Shan and not the commonly spoken Burmese language. It will help to give an insight to an often underrepresented ethnic minority group and empower cross cultural learning amongst the participants. The third phase is to screen the final five documentaries back in Shan State. Lastly, the screenings and workshops proposed by our counterpart in the UK will give access to the young filmmakers both in Yangon and Kali the opportunity to hear and learn from filmmakers and exchange ideas with university students from the UK.
